Chopard Logo Design History and Evolution

By Billy Clarke Leave a Comment

The Chopard brand first started out as the shop of Louis-Ulysse Chopard in 1860. Chopard originally got its fame because the company could make beautiful and delicate ladies watches and pocket watches at a time when most timekeeping devices were rather bulky. Though Chopard does not exclusively make women’s watches and jewelry in modern times, they continue to be known for refined and beautifully decorated watches.

The Chopard logo has a beautiful design that matches the brand’s aesthetic. Its elegant curves and angled edges make an otherwise simple logo into a very stylish graphic that represents the company well.

Chopard Logo Design Elements

Chopard uses a monochromatic color scheme for the two lines of text that make up their logo. It is typically just shown as a black text on a white background. The Chopard logo has a custom calligraphic font that slopes heavily towards the right. Unusual features of this font include a small look along the top of the R and an open bottom edge along the P. The C is the only capital letter in the brand name, and its elaborate curls make it stand out even more.

Below the brand name is the name Geneve, which references the Chopard headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. This word is completely capitalized, and its font is a crisp, san serif font. Sharply angled edges along the tips of the G and the E’s turns even this simple font into an elegant logo.

1. Shape

Chopard’s logo shape has remained remarkably consistent over the years, so there are only three major logo shapes. Back when the company was still a very small company, their logo just said “L.U.C.” because theses were the initials of the founder. This then changed to the name “Chopard” once the founder’s son and grandson took over the company after his death. Ever since the company relocated their headquarters in Geneva in 1937, the logo has simply been the brand name written on one line, and “Geneve” written on the second line in a different font.

2. Color

Chopard’s colors have always been quite versatile. Though the logo is technically black on white, they change the color to coordinate with watch designs or advertisements regularly. The most common colors for the logo are black, white, silver, and gold, but red and blue are occasionally used as well.

3. Font

Chopard has preferred to use a script font for their brand name and a typographical font for their location for many years. The most noticeable change is that they switched from a romanticized font with serifs to a san-serif font in the 1980s. Around this time, the script font was slightly modified to become more slanted and elongated.

Influences/Inspiration

Chopard’s logo is slightly unusual because it uses a delicate script font with lowercase lettering instead of using the all-capitalized san-serif fonts favored by so many other watch companies. This script font was initially created because Chopard mostly sold small, elegant wristwatches for women at the time. The dainty curls of their logo still references the jewelry-like nature of the Chopard timekeeping creations.

Chopard’s decision to use the name of Geneva, Switzerland in their logo goes back to the early 1900s when Geneva was renowned for its watchmaking. The company was certified with the Geneva Seal, a highly prestigious mark, and they wanted to celebrate this by including Geneve in their logo.

Chopard Logo

Trivia

  • Chopard’s founder was just a farm boy before he got his start in the watchmaking industry, but he was so highly skilled at watchmaking that his watches were sought after by the time he was 24.
  • The logo says “Geneve” instead of “Geneva” because the municipality is technically named “Villa de Geneve.”
  • Chopard is one of the few watchmaking companies that is still family owned and family run. However, it is now run by the Scheufele family, because the Chopard family descendents were no longer interested in watchmaking.

Conclusion

The elegant loops and stylish angles in the Chopard logo add subtle notes of visual interest to a simple logo design. Over several decades, this logo has served the company so well that they have barely changed it. Whenever you see a Chopard watch, you can easily identify it thanks to the signature Chopard logo.

Blancpain Logo Design History and Evolution

By Eric N. Addams Leave a Comment

When Jehan-Jaques Blancpain started a small watch workshop in 1735, he began a business that would become a major player in the international watchmaking community. The family company was responsible for many innovations, and they continue to use traditional mechanical watchmaking methods today. Despite many changes in the company, the Blancpain name and logo are still highly recognized and respected now.

Blancpain Logo Design Elements

Blancpain creates a visually pleasing logo with their carefully designed font and layout. Even though the logo just consists of the founder’s initials, the date of founding, and the brand name, it still looks bold and interesting. The top line, which says “JB” is compressed and skewed so that the lower curve of the J barely sticks out. Its clever design also makes the initials also look like a single, bold B with an unusually elaborate stem.

Beneath this, the date “1735” is written in a very shortened, compressed font that combines the initials and date into a single design. Beneath the date and initials is the brand name, “Blancpain,” written entirely in capitalized letters. Both the first B and the last N are slightly larger to create more balance in the logo. It almost always appears as a black logo written on a white background.

Changes and Evolution

1. Shape

The Blancpain logo underwent many changes as the company changed hands throughout the years. Back in the 1800s, it was a more elaborate wordmark that stated the name and location of the company. This then transitioned to a plainer logo that only said “Blancpain.” Once Blancpain was bought by the Piguet watchmaking company in the 1980s, they switched to the logo that is still in use today.

2. Color

Blancpain has always favored simple color schemes for their logos. They tend to pick a black logo on a white background for the official logo, and then these colors may be slightly altered when the logo is placed on watches.

3. Font

In the mid 1950s, Blancpain primarily used a san serif font for their logo. However, by the 1980s, Blancpain had switched to a Roman font that was quite similar to the one used today. Since then, the only noticeable change to the font is that it has become much bolder and thicker.

Influences/Inspiration

A lot of the inspiration for the current Blancpain logo relies on referencing the company’s past. Since Blancpain was bought and resold and renamed many times since the 1700s, it was important for the company to remind customers of their historic past and their traditional methods of watchmaking. However, they made the smart decision to avoid an excessively plain logo that just stated their name and founding date. Stretching and skewing the lettering turns it into a more artistic logo that stands out better from other watchmaking companies.

blancpain

Trivia

  • The very first Blancpain workshop was so small that it fit in the upper floor of Jehan-Jacques tiny home.
  • For a brief time in the early 1900s, Blancpain was legally required to change its name to Rayville because no members of the Blancpain family controlled the firm.
  • Another name that Blancpain watches were sold under is Harwood, because the company partnered with Harwood to make the first automatic wristwatch.
  • Blancpain is very well known for being involved in GT racing, so they have a special line of logos used in the racing series they sponsor. This logo variation includes a combination of a speed dial and a watch face wrapping around the traditional logo.

Conclusion

Blancpain’s devotion to finding new methods of using traditional watchmaking techniques has allowed them to remain popular for centuries. Their modern logo references the proud past of Blancpain while also meeting modern aesthetic standards. The combination of unusual shapes and sizes makes an otherwise plain logo into a visually pleasing emblem that looks great on watch faces and storefronts.

Vacheron Constantin Logo Design History and Evolution

By Eric N. Addams Leave a Comment

Founded in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron, Vacheron Constantin is one of the most prestigious luxury watch brands. Their inventive watchmakers helped to change the field of watchmaking, and they were responsible for converting watch movements to calibres and making the pantographic device.

In modern times, Vacheron Constantin is known for its innovative yet beautiful watches that are made from luxury materials. Many of these watches are decorated with the Maltese Cross that is part of Vacheron’s logo. Keep reading this article to find out why the Vacheron Constantin logo uses this design and discover more about their logo design history.

Vacheron Constantin Logo Design Elements

At the top of the Vacheron Constantin logo is a Maltese Cross, which looks like a symmetrical, four armed cross with eight pointed tips. This symbol has been a part of the Vacheron Constantin logo since the 1870s. Beneath the cross is the brand name which is centered along the first C in “Constantin.”

The brand name is written in a neo-grotesque font that is characterized by tall, san-serif letters with even, geometric shapes. Only capital letters are used, which makes the brand name stand out more. In some instances, the logo also includes the city of origin, “Geneve,” in smaller lettering below the brand name. The entire logo is generally a soft golden brown color that looks luxurious yet understated. Its background may be either black or white. These elements make the Vacheron Constantin logo very similar to the Patek Philippe logo, which uses a font from the same family, and the same basic logo design elements.

Changes and Evolution

1. Shape

Over the years, Vacheron Constantin’s logo shape has changed many times. In some versions, the Maltese cross is bigger, smaller, or missing altogether. In other styles, the cross has been located to the left of the brand name, or centered between the words “Vacheron” and “Constantin.” There was a brief experiment with using horse shoes in place of the cross, before Vacheron went back to using the Maltese Cross.

The text in the logo has also changed. Some logos included the date of founding or more details about the company. Older versions of the logo tended to say connect the two names with an ampersand signal or the Latin word “Et” because the company was called “Vacheron and Constantin.” Any symbol to join the names was eventually removed when the brand name was simplified.

2. Color

Most versions of Vacheron Constantin’s logo have been black on a white background. However, the company may occasionally portray the logo in gold, white, silver, or grey to match different watch or advertising color schemes.

3. Font

Earlier versions of the Vacheron Constantin logo had a curling script font that was similar to many other logos used by Swiss tradesmen. By the early 1900s, this had been streamlined to a classic Roman font. The font was made even sleeker when the serifs were removed, and it turned into a thin, san-serif font very similar to the one in use today. In modern times, the same font shape is used, but the signature Vacheron Constantin font now has thicker and bolder lines.

Influences/Inspiration

The Maltese cross on the logo is technically a heraldic device used by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, but it was actually selected for the Vacheron Constantin logo for different reasons. This symbol was picked by the company because it looks like a component of the watch. It bears a remarkable similarity to the barrel that limits tension within the mainspring. The recent decision to start using more gold for the company logo colors was inspired by a few other popular watch logos because it is more colorful than a basic black and white color scheme without being too flashy.

Vacheron Constantin

Trivia

  • Vacheron Constantin got its name because the Vacheron family partnered up with Francois Constantin in 1819 when they realized they needed an associate who could travel to other countries to market their watches.
  • The Vacheron Constantin logo bears many similarities to the Patek Philippe logo, which is also golden brown and also has a squared cross centered above a brand name, but Patek Philippe was founded much later.
  • In their many years of business, Vacheron Constantin has had over 50 logos.

Conclusion

The stylish Vacheron Constantin logo combines a signature company image with the brand name to appeal to many consumers. You can find the many design elements of this logo in the various components of the luxury watches produced by Vacheron Constantin. This logo looks sleek and elegant like all other Vacheron Constantin products.

Audemars Piquet Logo Design History and Evolution

By Eric N. Addams Leave a Comment

In 1875, Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet united to form the Audemars Piguet watch company. They quickly became notorious for watches that featured both a perpetual calendar and chronograph. Watchmaking enthusiasts appreciate that Audemars Piguet still makes traditional mechanical watches, and the watches are also loved by fashionistas and celebrities due to their bold, eye catching designs.

Just like the company’s watches, the Audemars Piguet logo also has a very striking design. In this article, we will show you more of the brand’s fascinating history and tell you the inspiration behind this impactful logo.

Audemars Piguet Logo Design Elements

Audemar Piguet’s logo is a bold black rectangle with white font in two horizontal lines. The first line of the logo says “Audemars Piguet,” and the second line says “Le Brassus” in much smaller, italicized letters centered beneath the brand name. A classic Old Style typeface with serifs is used to write the “Le Brassus” line.

In the brand name, the A has an unusual shape that adds some visual interest to the design. Only the left side of the A is diagonal, and the right side of the A is completely vertical. Both the A and the P are slightly larger than the rest of the capitalized letters. The font for the Audemars Piguet brand name is a customized font that is similar in many ways to that of another famous watch brand logo, the A. Lange & Sohne logo. It is characterized by rectangular curves, wide vertical stems, thin horizontal crossbars, and slanted serifs.

Changes and Evolution

Audemars Piquet OLD
Audemars Piquet NEW

1. Shape

Older logos for Audemars Piguet simply said “Audemars Piguet & Co” in a single line of plain text. The brand eventually decided to go with a longer logo that looked more distinguished, so they changed it to a logo that said “Audemars Piguet” on the top line and “Le maître de l’horlogerie depuis 1875” on the bottom line. This logo became even more elaborate when the AP initials were added in a third line along the top of the logo. However, Audemars Piguet began to realize that simpler was probably better, so they removed the motto on the third line. In order to create an even more straightforward logo, Audemars Piguet then removed the extra set of initials.

2. Color

For many years, Audemars Piguet mostly used a logo that had black text on a white background or one with gold text on a white background. However, they now mostly use a logo with white text on a black background because it looks stronger and more noticeable.

3. Font

On the older logos, Audemars Piguet used a simple san-serif font that could easily be engraved or printed in small surface areas. By the time they had switched to the longer logo with the initials, brand name, and brand motto, Audemars Piguet had switched to the fonts that are still in use today. The only difference is that the small, italicized text is used to write a brand location, not a brand motto.

Influences/Inspiration

A custom font is used for the logo to add some interest and style, and the slanted A gives the logo a little more movement. Audemars Piguets dark logo coloring is an intentional choice to make the logo stand out from all the watch companies that have black text logos. This dark color choice also emphasizes the strength and daring of the company. Another thing that makes Audemars Piguet’s logo so unique is the inclusion of Le Brassus as their headquarters. Unlike all the big companies located in Geneva, Audemars Piguet continues to operate out of a tiny village in a Swiss valley. This appeals to customers because it reminds them that of the brands artisan quality and craftsmanship.
Audemars Piquet

Trivia

  • One of the most prized watches with the Audemars Piguet logo on it is their 1955 first series of calendar watches that had a leap year indication on it. Only nine of these were ever made.
  • Audemars Piguet stands out from many other watchmaking corporations because they are actually still owned by the founding family.
  • The Audemars Piguet logo was also one of the first watch logos to appear on watches made from carbon and titanium, which the company popularized as watch building materials.

Conclusion

The dark coloring and the stylistic lettering on the Audemars Piguet logo make it a very visually appealing design. It retains its good looks whether it is printed on a huge billboard or small watchface. Though it is still a somewhat new logo, this design is ideal for conveying the strength, innovation and prominence of the Audemars Piguet brand.

Bremont Logo Design History and Evolution

By Eric N. Addams Leave a Comment

Bremont stands out from other luxury watchmakers because of its unusual origins. Instead of being an ancient Swiss company, Bremont was founded by two brothers, Nick and Giles English, in 2002. Bremont is known for its aviation themed watches, and even their logo is based on an airplane reference.

In the few decades since the company was created, the Bremont logo has been slightly altered a few times. Each change has helped to further refine the logo into a design that promotes the elegant yet practical style of Bremont. Keep reading to learn more about the fascinating Bremont logo.

Bremont Logo Design Elements

Bremont’s logo uses a combination of their brand name, product description, and signature image. Across the top of the logo is the word “Bremont” in large letters, and the word “Chronometers” is centered in much smaller text at the bottom. In the middle are two curved shapes that create a horizontal line separating the lines of text. The shapes have a slightly bulging tip that thins out and then swirls together in the center to look like a stylized airplane propeller.

Though normally depicted as a black design on a white background, Bremont occasionally changes their logo to a white design on a black background. All text on the logo is written in an elegant sans-serif font with even line widths and an all-capitals design. Both the top of the E and the top of the T in “Bremont” have a slightly angled tip that adds subtle visual interest.

Changes and Evolution

Bremont Old Logo
Bremont New Logo

1. Shape

In the previous logo version, the word “Chronometers” was not written at the bottom of the logo. The propeller shape was also more symmetrical, and the center area did not swirl together to create a circle of negative space. In the first version, the middle of each propeller wing created more of a triangle. This was then changed to a curved, fishtail like shape before eventually becoming the modern swirl.

2. Color

Though Bremont’s logo most often shows up a black on white design in advertising, it looks very different when printed on watch faces. The Bremont logo sometimes shows up in white, silver, gold, or grey. This versatility in color helps the logo to be a stylistic element on every Bremont watch.

3. Font

Like many other watch companies, Bremont updates their logo by altering the font. For a while, the font was a more classic Roman font that featured small serifs and contrasting line thicknesses. In one version of the font, the R in “Bremont” curved drastically at the tip, and the serifs were sharply angled. Changing to a san serif design was not just a wise move because it looks more modern. This logo evolution created a logo that was more legible when printed in small font on the face of a watch.

Bremont New Logo

Influences/Inspiration

Bremont’s logo is clearly inspired by the English brothers’ love of vintage aircraft. Their depiction of an airplane propeller pays homage to the rich history behind the brand. The decision to use a stylized silhouette of a propeller on the logo helps to add detail and flair to an otherwise plane logo.

Bremont’s decision to change the logo font and add the phrase “chronometers” to the logo has helped to further improve the brand’s reputation. The sleek, modern font promotes Bremont’s fresh new take on watchmaking. At the same time, the term “chronometer,” which is a word from the 1700s used to describe timepieces made to certain precision standards, helps to convey a sense of tradition and quality.

Trivia

  • The Bremont company founders were inspired to begin selling aviation-themed watchers after they were in a serious plane crash while flying a vintage WWII airplane.
  • The English brothers realized it would be hard to trademark their name as a watch brand, so they named their company after a French farmer, Antoine Bremont, who let them stay at his farm after they had to make an emergency plane landing in bad weather.
  • In keeping with the aviation theme, Bremont creates special edition watches that are only available to people who have served in the military aboard certain aircraft.

Conclusion

The Bremont logo combines tradition and modernity through its design elements, and the overall effect is a logo that is both simple and carefully designed. This ability to merge supposedly contradictory principles is evident in the company’s durable yet stylish watches. As long as Bremont continues to create aviation-themed watches, their logo is an excellent representation of the company.
