One of the most famous international direct broadcast satellite services in the world, DirecTV has become a subsidiary of AT&T in July of 2015. Along with the acquisition, AT&T also changed the DirecTV logo, putting an end to the 20-year-old cyclone-shaped symbol. While the logo had suffered some modifications in the past, 2016 is the first year since 1990 when it went through a drastic change.
The history of the station started in 1985. Initially, the TV station started as Hughes Electronics. It started off after the merger of Hughes Aircraft with Delco Electronics. The TV channel only started its tenure as DirecTV in 1990, and that is also when the DirecTV logo first came to be.
DirecTV Logo Design Elements
The three main design elements of the DirecTV logo are the shape, the color, and the font of the logo. Frequently referred to as the D logo or the cyclone logo, the DirecTV logo has suffered several changes over the years. However, after the station was officially named DirecTV, the logo kept its shape until AT&T stepped in charge.
Other than the cyclone part of the DirecTV logo, the other important parts are font and the color. While the font has changed a few times over the years, the dominant color in the DirecTV logo has always been blue.
Changes and Evolution
With a history spanning more than 30 years, the television channel and DirecTV logo are some of the most renowned satellite TV services in the world. The satellite service provides digital satellite TV and audio to people all over the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Over the years, it was mostly the texture, shade, and font of the DirecTV logo that changed, leaving the original logo mostly intact. However, after the television providers were bought out by AT&T in 2015, the DirecTV logo itself suffered the first major change since it first came to be in 1985. Interestingly, the color scheme remained the same despite the rebranding.
Initially, before the network was called DirecTV, it was simply called Hughes Electronics. The DirecTV logo back then, in 1985, consisted of a simple, blue, horizontal rounded rectangle. The rectangle had the word HUGHES in all caps inside it. In addition, the word ELECTRONICS in all caps stood just below the rounded rectangle.
Some may argue that it meant to represent a cinema screen, given that it belonged to a TV station. However, it’s only after 1990, when the channel became DirecTV, that the DirecTV logo everyone knows and loves came to be.
The next DirecTV logo, which would eventually become a staple of the channel throughout its history, was changed in 2016. However, there is still much to talk about the cyclone logo and all it stood for.
First of all, let’s approach the issue of the cyclone. While most people simply saw the DirecTV logo as a stylized letter D, it turns out that it had a secret meaning all along. The curvature of the letter D was stylized so that the white negative spacing represents a cyclone.
The use of negative spacing was an excellent idea. It helped the company show off its creativity and make a name for itself. In fact, the cyclone DirecTV logo gathered praise from millions of people all over the world. It ended the pressure on the PR and marketing for 25 years before being switched.
The year 2015 brought forth a couple new DirecTV logos. The logo on DirecTV after AT&T took over simply consisted of the word DIRECTV written in all caps, with the larger company’s logo features below the text, alongside the words Now part of the AT&T family. Eventually, in 2016, they settled for the AT&T logo to the left of the words DIRECTV for the new DirecTV logo.
However, the DirecTV logo has always kept one shade of blue or another throughout its long tenure. That was in spite of the fact that it changed ownership twice and went through a redesign the same amount of times.
What makes this even more interesting is the fact that blue, often associated with the concepts of stability and depth, is often used in logo design to convey feelings of loyalty, trust, calmness, and faith. Since it remained part of the DirecTV logo vector throughout the entirety of its existence, many believe that the color was perfect. Companies such as LinkedIn maintained similar shades of blue for that purpose as well.
First off, the Hughes Electronics font was a simple custom typeface, bolded. It made to look like many other corporate fonts of the time.
Next came the first official DirecTV logo font, back in 1990. It went through a couple of changes, with the staff attempting to give a more 3D look at some point, even making it gray on a black background at some point. This lasted until 2004 when the text underneath the logo was in a different font.
The new font stood taller and bold. This was due to an effort to streamline the DirecTV logo. That meant to use it and apply it much easier to multiple channels and show under the satellite television’s mantel.
Inspiration and Trivia
Howard Hughes wass a suspect of using his medical research center as a tax shelter. If not DirecTV would never have come to be. Of course, he transferred full ownership of Hughes Aircraft to the Medical Institute. That made it much easier for a court to appoint a new board of directors. Then, they sold Hughes Aircraft to General Motors.
General Motors then merged Hughes Aircraft with their subsidiary, Delco Electronics. Therefore, Hughes Electronics Corporation came to be. Eventually, it would lead to the creation of the DirecTV millions of people know and love today.
Interestingly, nobody actually knows why the cyclone in the DirecTV logo wasn’t more obvious. Or why people didn’t catch on to it sooner. In fact, the internet exploded with searches in regards to the old DirecTV logo in 2015, after the old cyclone logo replaced with the newer, AT&T one.
The old logo is still occasionally used as a secondary logo. However, you can find it by looking for a DirecTV logo PNG or any other picture format.
DirecTV is one of the most respected and internationally beloved satellite TV companies in the world. It has a very long and fascinating history. The DirecTV logo has long remains associated with quality programming. Even more, not even the changing of ownerships has managed to get people to stop seeing it that way.
