Popular media company Netflix has gone a long way since it came to be in 1997. What started out as a tiny company that allowed subscribers to rent movies has ballooned into a media titan that creates its own films and television shows. The Netflix logo appears on everything from DVD envelopes to the title screen for television shows.
Since it appears in many contexts, Netflix has worked hard to create a logo that looks stylish. Keep reading to learn all about the history and design elements that went into making the Netflix logo.
Netflix Logo Design Elements
The Netflix new logo got unveiled in 2014. It may just be red text on a white background, but there are many subtle design choices that make it an excellent icon. The red is a shade known as “Pomegranate” which is a lighter, cool-toned tint of the color. Unlike many other internet company logos, Netflix does not just use their brand name written in a straight line.
The company adds visual interest to the word “Netflix” by skewing its shape. Though the top line of the word is straight, the bottom edges of the letters follow a convex curve.
Changes and Evolution
The very first logo for Netflix was quite different. It originally was an oval shaped strip of film curled around the world “Net” and followed by the word “Flix.” When the company started offering its service on the website, they added “.com” to the end of the Netflix logo. The next change to the shape occurred in 2000 when the company switched to a rectangle. It just included the word “Netflix” as a line with the bottom edges of the letters forming a concave curve. This was later streamlined in 2014 when the outer rectangle was removed to create the current Netflix new logo.
The old Netflix logo used a black and purple color scheme. Starting in 2000, the company rebranded with a signature shade of red. The new logo first looked like a red rectangle with white letters that had a thick black outline. In modern times, the logo removed the black outline and red background. It is now a simpler color scheme of plain red text on a white background. It’s a similar shade the YouTube logo chose for the purpose of drawing more attention to their services.
At first, the Netflix logo font used a serifed Roman. Later versions of the new icon use the Graphique font that has san serif letters that are very narrow and tall. At first, they used a shadowed version of this font, but modern red logo removed them. The newest version of Netflix’s font is very similar to Graphique still, but the letter appears slightly wider and stretched out.
The font chosen for the main Netflix logo was from 1945, and it was intended to evoke a glamorous and cinematic feel. Though the original logos for Netflix were all references to cinema and film, the company shifted its marketing strategy away from DVD rentals in 2007. The eventual decision to change the logo from a cinematic marquee to a simple red on a white background was intended to show the company’s newfound focus on streaming services and creating original content. The cleaner lines are visible even if a user has poor image quality on television, computer, or smartphone screen.
Netflix’s decision to change from a purple logo to a red one had a practical reason. They wanted have noticeable red envelopes in the mail. The new Netflix logo first appeared on the trailers for “Orange Is the New Black” which later went on to become a hit show. Since the company did not make a big deal out of the new logo, many users were not even aware of the change for several weeks.
The Netflix logo has changed throughout the years to meet the company’s goals. Its elegantly streamlined appearance works well at all sizes, so the logo looks equally good on a big-screen television or a tiny smartphone screen. The new Netflix logo looks strong yet elegant, and it will serve the company well for years to come.
